Certificates Offered
Certificate of Biblical Studies: 36 semester hours Certificate of Pastoral Ministry: 96 semester hours Course Procedures
OBI employees a
unique method of learning whereby each student works closely with their pastor
or another qualified local individual who provides hands-on
oversight. In this discipleship role, the local mentor/adjunct
advisor interacts with the student on a regular basis to discuss assignments,
theological concepts, spiritual life, and practical ministry
skills. It is the mentor/adjunct advisor’s responsibility to
evaluate the student’s understanding of all assigned
material. Whether by written tests, essays, or mere discussion, the
adjunct advisor determines the student’s satisfactory of each course. For
those students unable to secure a local mentor/adjunct advisor, OBI will fill
that role until a local mentor/adjunct advisor is found.Semester Credit Hours
Although students
may advance at their own pace, each course is allotted a specific number of
semester credit hours commensurate to a timeframe deemed necessary to complete
the assigned workload. In a traditional setting, 1 semester hour is
equivalent to 1 in-class contact hour and 2 hours of independent study per week
for 16 weeks. Therefore, 1 semester credit hour equals 48 total hours of
study: 16 contact hours and 32 independent study hours. The OBI
format follows the same principle; however, other than the lime spent with the
local mentor/adjunct advisor, students are largely engaged in independent
study.
Certificate Programs
Certificate of Biblical Studies
The Certificate of Biblical and Theological Studies is designed to prepare
students for effective ministry in the workforce, at home, and the local
church.
Certificate of Pastoral Ministry
The Certificate of Pastoral Ministry is designed to provide a lay pastors,
evangelists, missionaries, and
Bible study teachers
with an education comparable to that which they
would receive in a traditional seminary.
Free Study Material: OBI provides free access to all texts and reading materials assigned for each course of study. However, due to OBI’s unique ministry model in which the local pastor/mentor serves as adjunct advisor, upon OBI’s approval, the adjunct advisor may substitute a particular text for with which he is more familiar. He may also choose design an elective course that better meets the student's needs and substitute it for one of OBI's elective. Such a course must be: 1) In the same category as the course for which it is a substitute; 2) Consists of the appropriate semester credit hours; and 3) Agree with OBI’s doctrinal statement. In either of these situations, the student and adjunct advisor will be responsible for their own study materials. Although such substitutions are very welcome, it is beyond OBI's scope of service to supply materials for substitution texts or substitution courses. Course
